What to see in Costa Rica

  • Sand Volcano: This volcano is in the La Fortuna district in the province of Alajuela. It is 1,670 metres tall and covers an area of 33 square kilometres.
  • Manuel Antonio National Park: An area of natural conservation located in the province of Puntarenas. In 2011 it was selected by Forbes magazine as one of the 12 most beautiful parks in the world.


Costa Rican gastronomy is mixed and influenced by three cultures: Spanish, African and Aborigine, which have provided delicious and creative recipes. The dish that best defines this cultural fusion is perhaps ‘Olla de carne’, considered a creole dish and made up of beef and vegetables.

Transport in Costa Rica

  • Plane:  The airport that receives international flights is the Juan Santamaria International Airport, 17 kilometres to the northeast of San José, in Alajuela city.
  • Taxis: Taxis work on a zonal system and as such prices depend on the area. Prices can also vary depending on the number of passengers.
  • Rental cars: Entering the country by car is expensive and complicated due to the cost of petrol and the amount of paperwork that must be filled in to permit a vehicle to enter the country. It may be a better option, therefore, to rent a car in places like Adobe or Dollar.
  • Busses: You can travel in Costa Rica using two types of bus; local and international, that connect the country to other capital cities in Central America.
