Its global oil exports – it is the world’s largest exporter of crude oil – have made it one of the world’s top 20 economies. Other important industries in the Saudi economy are the cemetery and steel manufacturing industries.

Climate in Saudi Arabia

With the exception of the province of Asir, Saudi Arabia is characterised by a desert climate, i.e. high temperatures during the day and sharp drops at night. In some territories, temperatures can reach almost 50°C, while minimums are usually in the 20-29°C range.

Saudi Arabian gastronomy and culture

Saudi Arabian gastronomy and culture

Lamb is the most commonly eaten dish in Saudi Arabia, usually accompanied by aromatic herbs and vegetables. Also worth mentioning is falafel, a typical dish consisting of a kind of croquette made with beans and chickpeas. Due to the prohibitions of the Koran, both pork and alcohol are totally forbidden throughout the country.

In terms of culture, the two most important museums in the country are the National Museum in Riyadh and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Jeddah. Architecturally speaking, it is worth mentioning the modern skyscrapers that populate the big cities, such as the Kingdom Centre, located in Riyadh, which is 302 metres high, or the Makkah Roya Clock Tower Hotel, located in Mecca, which is the tallest in the country at 601 metres high.

Transport in Saudi Arabia

Transport in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia has a road network of more than 200 000 km, although only a quarter of it is paved. Cars are the most commonly used mode of transport, not least because of the low price of fuel, and because other modes such as rail only connect the capital to major towns. Saudi Arabia also has 4 ports, 10 heliports and more than 200 airports, although only 80 have paved runways. The most important airports are King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah – with more than 17 million passengers a year – and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh – with more than 13 million.  The country’s main airline is Saudi Arabian Airlines, which serves some of the world’s major international airports in Africa, Asia, Europe and the United States.
