Panama is a country located in the southeast of Central America, and borders the Caribbean to the north and Pacific Ocean to the South. A geographic position that has given Panama the chance to build the famous Panama Canal, which plays a very important role in the social and economic development of the country.

In regards to its population, Panama currents has over 3.5 million inhabitants from different ethnic backgrounds, a fact that enhances the cultural richness of the country.

Climate in Panama

Panama is characterized by a tropical climate with high temperatures that vary little throughout the year. If we observe different areas, the capital of the country, Panama city has temperatures that vary between 24 and 35 degrees Celsius. In the higher regions there are lower temperatures, around 23 degrees. The coastal zones have a hotter climate, with an average of 31 degrees.

Economy and Culture

Panama’s economy stands out as being one of the most stable in the Americas. The main economic activities in the country are based in the finance sector, tourism and logistics, which represent 75% of GDP (Gross Domestic Product).

In regards to its culture, Panama is characterized as being multicultural. The majority of the population professes to be Catholic. In the center of the country the biggest celebrations are related to the so-called patron saints of the towns. Its cultural richness also stems from the seven indigenous groups in Panama, based in semi-autonomous areas where they maintain their ancestral customs.

Symbols in Panama

Panama is recognised at international level by its state symbols. Here are some of the most well known:

  • The national flower of Panama: an orchid known as the “Holy Spirit flower”, characterized by its strong ivory coloured petals and center with a dove that flowers between July and October.
  • Overskirts: a variety of skirts and dresses known for their decoration.
  • Balboa: a currency used within Panama together with the dollar, named in honour of Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa.

What to see in Panama

Here are some of the most attractive places Panama has to offer:

  • Barú Volcano: this volcano is in the Chiriquí province and is the highest point in the country with an altitude of 3474 meters, from which you can see both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans on a clear day.
  • Casco Viejo: one of the most touristic spots in the country is the Casco Viejo in Panama City. Points of interest are the Metropolitan Cathedral, Las Bovedas (The vaults) and the Residencia de la República.
  • Old Panama: located about 8 kilometers from the current Panama City and in 2003 was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
  • Panama Canal: for many, the eighth wonder of the world.
  • Portobelo: Portobelo town is located 50km from Colon city. A place that offers visits to the old military fortifications of Portabelo and San Lorenzo, both delcared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

Gastronomy

The gastronomy of the country is marked by historical influences from the american indian, hispanic, african hispanic and african cultures. Some of the typical dishes are the following:

  • Gallo pinto or Guacho de Rabito: Panama’s national dish, with rice and beans.
  • Gaucho de marisco: a mix of soup and rice with mixed seafood.
  • Pollo sudado: mixed vegetables with chicken stock.
  • Ropa vieja con patacones: a dish made with shredded meat and cooked with tomato, onion and garlic.
  • Sancocho: one of panama’s most traditional dishes, made with chicken broth mixed with ñame, coriander and spices.
  • El bodichi: unsalted rice bun rapped in bijao leaves.
  • Bienmesabe: Traditional sweet.

Transport in Panama

  • Plane: The most important airport in the country is Tocumen international airport which is located 20km from the capital. There are smaller airports which are used for internal flights within Panama.
  • Taxis: Taxis follow a zonal system and as such prices vary depending on the area. Rates also depend on the number of passengers.

  • Buses: Panama city has a central station from which buses depart to almost everywhere in the country.
